Speeding and Reckless Driving Attorney serving Alexandria, Fairfax and Prince William County

Between Alexandria, Fairfax, Prince William County, and the rest of Northern Virginia, there are about 1.5 million people and four million cars. Not surprisingly, traffic tickets are big business. If you’re in traffic long enough, odds are you will pick up a speeding ticket or some other traffic citation. But all traffic tickets, especially speeding tickets and reckless driving charges, can affect your license. Here’s how:

  1. Your license to drive in Virginia could be suspended. In a reckless driving case, especially one involving high speed, the court can suspend your license for up to six months.

  2. You could be sentenced to jail time. Prosecutors in Alexandria, Prince William, and Fairfax are seeking jail time in reckless driving cases involving very high speeds or an accident. If you are charged with reckless driving and your case involves high speeds or an accident, you could be sentenced to actual jail time.

  3. Your could have points assessed to your license. Convictions and guilty pleas are reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles, which will add negative “bad” driving points to your license. A conviction for reckless driving, for instance, will attach six bad driving points to your record. Accumulate enough bad driving points and you will be forced to take classes, face an administrative suspension, or lose your license.

  4. Your insurance premiums could rise. Your insurance company will see any convictions and pleas on your driving record. Your premiums will rise, or your coverage may be dropped outright.
